Story

At first glance one might think that there is really not that much to a Pokemon game’s story, but in reality there’s more to it than really meets the eye particularly when it comes to the beginning and end of a good Pokemon game.

In Pokemon X, the main character starts off in Vaniville Town in the southern edge of the Kalos region. The main character (as in most Pokemon games) is ready to set out on a journey of the Pokemon world. However, it would appear in this game that your mother is a famous rhyhorn racer and instead of the typical complete better-opposite rival, the main character appears to have 2 battle rivals 1 pokedex rival and a comic relief rival (of some sort). Not only that, but each of these rivals has their own distinct personality and interests. With a slight bit of encouragement from your rivals/friends the main character is set off on the way to becoming the new Pokemon League Champion.

Gameplay

Pokemon X advances the gameplay of Pokemon in areas that one most likely wouldn’t expect from a Pokemon game. However, most of the noticeable gameplay elements that are in this game take place outside of the main battle system. The new training system allows one to train Pokemon in any way that one would want in terms of stats and abilities with regards to the base stats of the Pokemon in question of course, which can be slightly manipulated via the breeding system.

However, the gameplay advances in this game far exceed that of just combat. The game also allows one to customize their whole character from skin color, to hair, to clothes. Each city offers different designs to the player which allows the player to mix and match as they choose. #StylishforLife.

Music

This game is a legitimate orchestral masterpiece from head to toe. Each city that one goes to has a different piece of music associated with that particular city. The music always changes depending on the mood of the scene. Often times to me it felt as though with each line of dialogue the music changed to fit what that character was saying, the music just fit that well with the rest of the game.

Immersion

In terms of immersion this game really hit the nail on the head for me with maybe a slight exception here and there for the minigames. Each battle and conversation really made it feel like I was a Pokemon trainer in a Pokemon world, full of a million different things to do. The only thing that slightly bugged me was the mini-games that were a little silly and distracting at times. It just felt like perhaps there was a better way to put Pokemon training into the perspective of the player. The balloons just did not really do it for me.

Art

As a person who played Pokemon back in the 90s on the Gameboy color system, I would definitely say that Pokemon has come a long way since the days of old (by which I mean the early 90s). The colors in this game are bright, beautiful, and immersive, from the skyscrapers to the holo-messages the player receives throughout the course of the game. Pokemon has come a long way from each different city having its own unique color, if anything each city has its own unique colors and aspects, which of course depend upon the season the 3ds is on.

Plot

Whereas the plot of Pokemon Black and White left me with a lot of questions as to how these Humans treat their Pokemon and whether keeping Pokemon is humane or not, Pokemon X and Y left me with a lot more answers as to why some of the people in the Pokemon world appear to be complete jerks, and yes I’m looking at you Green. Team Flare, the main bad guys of the game, are probably the oddest villains ever. [SPOILERS]Team Flare’s main goal is not to catch Pokemon for money, or to protect Pokemon from, evil Pokemon trainers, but rather to end the world from sheer boredom. Team Flare is bored with the Pokemon world’s existence, so they want to start the world over from the beginning with themselves at the center of its creation.

[End of Spoilers] Such a cruel plot really brings the action of the game to a head towards the climax of the game, leaving the player with unexpected outcomes and circumstances.

Final Verdict

Pokemon X is sure to introduce people to a whole new world of art, creativity, and challenge unlike any Pokemon game before it. I did feel that the struggle towards the end of the game was a bit easy. Although I have been playing Pokemon games for a very long time, some parts of this game seem to make the player a bit overpowered at points. The new expshare feature of this game may also be a contributing factor to this feeling of being overpowered. The new expshare system allows all of your party to receive half of the exp even if that Pokemon wasn’t used in battle. The new expshare feature is given to the player pretty early in the game (right after the first gym). However, the player can choose to use expshare to their discretion, which makes the game all the better in my opinion.

All of the above, are the reasons that Pokemon receives my
