Since you’re here, that must mean you came to read about the sick twisted adventure that is Monster Hunter World. Honestly, this review has been a long time coming and I’m glad it’s here and that my head didn’t explode in the process. After several months in the fetal position, I have returned and here’s my review.
Story
The story of Monster Hunter World is pretty simple. You are a Monster Hunter. You hunt monsters and essentially on this journey you’re out to hunt some of the biggest monsters of all. DRAGONS, but you got to start with the small fry before you work your way all the way up to that. DRAGONS, take time and you’re going to have to get through some major grinding before you make your way up to that but I’ll leave it up to the next section to explain that.
Gameplay
Welcome to the grind my friend. It’s time to sweat. When you step into the game, you may wander into a group of explorers on the same quest as you dressed in sick armor and weapons. Wow, you may think to yourself. Where do I get sick armor and weapons like that guy. Guess what fam, you’re grinding for it. “How do I beat this next monster? He’s so difficult.” You might ask. The answer, again the sumptuous grind. If you like grinding by fighting gigantic monsters in order to obtain their valuable body parts? Then, boy, have I go the game for you. Honestly, the grind is part of the reason that this review took me so long to finish, but it was a very enjoyable, addicting kind of grind. The same kind of grind that you get from Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts (more on that later), a good kind of grind. Not only that, but the gameplay mechanics in Monster World are so simple and easy to use on a base level, but it takes a true expert to master a weapon, that lunging attack takes practice friends. However, you definitely have a massive world to explore all of your abilities. You make your own character and go on adventures in a massive open world full of adventures and possibilities.
Immersion
Can we talk about how many hours I spent in this game trying to beat it? The answer is we can’t my timer aged and turned to dust a long, long time ago, along with skin and bones. You will be spending many, many hours in this game. Once this game sucks you in, you’re coming along for the journey. Much like a delicious chocolate bar that I’m most likely allergic to, you can’t just take out one. Fighting monsters takes a lot of free time. You have to get the armor, the weapon, the perfect palico, the perfect trap, the perfect potion, the perfect antidote, and have the perfect emote ready for the time of your life.
Music
The music of Monster Hunter World went from downright scary times to delightfully uplifting at others. Some of it I feel like I should be listening to on my daily commute to work, other days I feel like I should be listening to the soundtrack every time I walk through a dark alley at night alone. The music changes with the gameplay but is overall very captivating and a part of this game’s immersion for sure.
Art
The art style of Monster Hunter World is different to say the least. It is 100% different from every game out on the market right now. This game’s outfits are what happens when you mix steam punk, with medieval, with furry (don’t look it up if you don’t know what it is (you’ve been warned)), with explorer. I was honestly put off by the style at first, but I’ve honestly grown quite fond of it. This expansive world also sports decent graphics on the PS4 without too much of a hiccup.
Plot
The plot of this game is once again fairly simple. You are hunting DRAGONS. However, you’ll definitely meet an interesting cast of characters and monsters along the way. That’s essentially the plot of the story for the most part, similar to most other Monster Hunter games, but this time you are exploring an entirely new land with a lot to explore if you played the past games.
Replay Value
In Monster Hunter World’s case, its replay value is less about whether I’d like to play this game again than would I have the time to play this game again. I’d definitely want to play this game again, but I’d rather avoid getting sucked in again as the grind is honestly a bit too much for me. I would definitely participate in playing this game again with my fully completed monster hunter, but I feel like deleting my save file and starting the game again would be a bit too painful for me. I’m thinking that this is one save file that I’d rather keep.
Overall
Monster Hunter World is an expansive multiplayer/single player game that will leave you wanting more. It can be very addicting and satisfying all at the same. I would recommend this game to a new player looking to try something different. It’s not just a game, it’s an adventure. Of course, thank you for coming here and reading this review. It really means a lot to me as I put many hours into this game. I made a promise that this would be the next review that I did and I always try to keep my promises if at all possible. Here are the scores:
An expected value of 90%
An average value of 75%
And an overall value of 82%
Thanks for coming. If you enjoyed, leave me a like on Twitter, follow, and share with your friends!
